Will Spray Foam Stop Pipes from Freezing?

Frozen pipes are a major concern in Saskatchewan, especially in agricultural buildings, shops and outbuildings that may not be consistently heated. When temperatures drop well below freezing, unprotected pipes can freeze quickly, leading to blockages, bursts and costly repairs. For property owners in Saskatchewan, spray foam insulation is often part of the solution.


Why Pipes Freeze in the First Place


Pipes freeze when the temperature around them drops below 0°C and remains there long enough for the water inside to solidify. This is most common in areas with poor insulation, air leaks or inconsistent heating.


In agricultural buildings, pipes are often located along exterior walls or in open spaces where they are exposed to cold air. Metal buildings are particularly vulnerable because they transfer cold temperatures quickly and allow condensation and drafts.


Once a pipe freezes, pressure can build up inside, which may cause it to crack or burst as the ice expands.

Pipe freezing is most common in:


  • Agricultural buildings with intermittent heating

  • Shops or garages that are not continuously heated

  • Crawl spaces or wall cavities along exterior walls

What Spray Foam Cannot Do Alone


While spray foam significantly reduces the risk of frozen pipes, it is not a standalone solution. If a building is left completely unheated during extreme cold, pipes can still freeze over time.


Additional measures may be needed, such as:


  • Maintaining a minimum indoor temperature

  • Using heat tracing or pipe heaters

  • Proper pipe placement away from exterior walls 


Spray foam works best as part of a complete strategy that includes both insulation and temperature management.
